Destination 1: Ujigawa Open Laboratory

The Kyoto University Disaster Prevention Research Institute Uji River Hydraulic Laboratory was established on 1 August 1953 to conduct experimental research aimed mainly at preventing and mitigating disasters related to water and soil. This laboratory is not a single-function facility limited to "hydraulic experiments," which is the name of the laboratory. The Ujigawa Open Laboratory is one of the world's largest comprehensive experimental facilities with a large number of observation and experiment equipment.

Destination 2: Amagase Dam

Located in the central Kinki region, the Yodo river system originates in Lake Biwa, from which the waters that will eventually become the Yodo River flow as the Seta River and then as the Uji River before combining with the Kizu River from the south and the Katsura River from the north to form the Yodo River, which empties into Osaka Bay.
A large number of people living in the Kinki region make use of the river's water.

The system as a whole includes seven dams and two floodgates, but Amagase Dam, a multipurpose dam that was completed in 1964, is the only dam on the Uji River, which comprises the main river of the Yodo River. The dam is a dome-shaped arch dam, and its lake is known as Lake Ho-o, meaning "phoenix," because it resembles a bird spreading its wings when seen from downstream.

During this field trip, you can go to the spectacular arched walkway, management walkway (catwalk), and so on.
